Vonnegut was a misfit, a poet, and a realist. His writing gave me faith in humanity when there was none to be found in my immediate surroundings. It was possessed with a sense of humor that set the bar for all future laughings, and a sense of truth for the hard stuff to come. Oddly enough, I also think he is why I like men with wild, curly hair and a penchant for doodling.
