Your Vote Does Matter

It might sound trite after the recent presidential election when President Elect Obama won more votes than any Democrat since LBJ, but every vote matters.  The current fiascos in Minnesota and Georgia underscore the power that a single voter can yield.  Hotly contested races that were too close to call.. Does God Exist?

  • Posted by: Jonathan Greenblatt
  • on November 14, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Hey, I attended a great debate the other night between Rabbi David Wolpe and Christopher Hitchens at the Wilshire Theatre in LA on whether or not God exists.  Wolpe is one of the best pulpit rabbis in the United States and presides over Sinai Temple in Los Angeles.  Hitchens is a rabble-rousing columnist.. Paul Newman Inspired a Generation of Entrepreneurs

The accidental entrepreneur blazed the trail for Ben and Jerry’s, Stonyfield Farms, and other socially responsible businesses.

I think most of the country knows him as Fast Eddie Felson or Cool Hand Luke. My kids think of him as an aging Hudson Hornet, pining away his days in the mythical Radiator Springs. But in my mind, I regard Paul Newman as perhaps the most successful social entrepreneur of our time and a role model who seeded…

Its worth noting that Van Jones has a smart piece in the recent issue of The Nation on a “Green New Deal” that takes a community-centric perspective on the same issues about leveraging this crisis for our collective economic and environmental benefit… there also has been an ongoing thread on Worldchanging about the same issues for past two years that I would encourage people to seek out – the articles are too many to cite, but all worth perusing

What an incredible feature.  Hard to vouch for the credibility of the methodology.  For example, McCain is running awfully close in Caracas, even leading in Algiers…   I also would guess that Dittoheads will find their worst fears reinforced by the strong preferences for the Democratic ticket in Syria and Iran.  Nonetheless, its pretty arresting to see the global case for Obama exemplified in this sea of dark blue.

when buying books, consider doing so via our friends at Better World Books because they offer free shipping, carbon-offfset every order, and they support book drives and collect used books via relationships with almost 1500 libraries and 2000 college campuses and partners across the US.  These donated books have resulted in more than $4.5 million for literacy programs and educational efforts across the US, plus saved a lot of books that otherwise would have been discarded.

If I Were President

  • and said:

If I were president, I would launch the Marshall Plan for Education:

(1) name Michelle Rhee the secretary of education
(2) eliminate No Child Left Behind and empower states to set targets and to provide incentives that ensure every child who graduate can read/write at appropriate level
(3) abolish tenure, institute merit-based salaries for teachers across the US and mandate team development among teachers
(4) engage corporations and philanthropists to create funding strategies to bring arts education back into every public school
(5) institute penmanship competitions so students do not lose ability to write long-hand and take notes with pen and paper
(6) allow students to sign up for AmeriCorps Fellowships, committing to several years of public service after graduation to subsidize university fees so students can graduate debt-free and communities can benefit from their talents
(7) offer free college education to returning GIs who served in Iraq or Afghanistan
(8) create public campaign for coalition of high-tech giants, including Microsoft, Cisco, Google, Oracle and others, to advance undergrad/graduate tutition fees for gifted students who excel in math and sciences and agree to work at these firms upon graduation
(9) insist that every school in America participate in US FIRST competition
(10) allocate funds to build a single librariy in every village in Africa (credti to John Wood from Room to Read for this idea) to rebuild our image in Africa and across the world
these are my ideas – what are YOUR iIDEAS!!  :-)
best,
Jonathan
