One of my favorite seasonal pop-ups is the summer lemonade stand. Just the other day, voices cheering their wares drew me to a street corner where three kids sat behind a table with a pitcher, cups, and an accompanying wagon of bottled lemonade.  It’s an almost impossible treat to refuse on a hot summer’s day, especially at twenty-five cents a cup (fifty cents for a large cup—the going price at this particular stand).

Perhaps just as refreshing as…

A Dispatch from Postopolis!

A Dispatch from Postopolis!

Joseph Grima is running a Ponzi scheme. Kind of. After the success of his inaugural Postopolis! in New York City in 2007, he’s been amassing recruits for a similar program on a downtown Los Angeles rooftop. But unlike more nefarious schemers of recent financial headlines, Grima trades on a currency of ideas. His world is not Wall Street, but architecture. Postopolis!, a week-long event open free to the public, is a series of discussions, interviews, slide-shows,…

In the sixties, an unlikely art activist emerged in Los Angeles teaching with impassioned dedication and style at the private Catholic college Immaculate Heart.  Sister Mary Corita, a radical in her own right, instructed students through mediums of collage, illustration, sewing, and serigraph to celebrate.. Thanks Max. So glad you enjoyed it. This online community board seemed like the perfect place to share the delightful encounter. Next to NFTE, I’m also a big fan of the Lower Eastside Girls Club, http://www.girlsclub.org/. More recently, I came across the TeachingKidsBusiness website that also seems pretty solid as an introduction to business for kids, http://www.teachingkidsbusiness.com/entrepreneurship-program.htm.

Digital Synesthesia

I’ve met someone who sees numbers as colors. For fun, a friend made her a scarf that looked to her like the number pi. This piece reminded me of a video I came across a while back that visualizes well the concept of synesthesia:http://www.territimely.com/_/v/2-short-films?video_id=34

LOOK: PACT Sustainable Underwear

I want to buy these! Patagonia, too, has made some awesome eco-conscience steps to making their line of clothes. Keeping the full product cycle of their apparel in mind, Patagonia recently made a goal to make all of its products recyclable by 2010 starting with their underwear. More here, http://tiny.cc/EX9el .

American Apparel’s New Product: Scraps

  • and said:

The potentially pleasant surprises in Bag-O-Scraps reminds me of “dollar Sundays” at Jet Rag on La Brea in West Hollywood. I’m not sure if they still have it, but on Sundays, one would encounter huge piles of clothes, all just one dollar each, with may duds and some treasures for the finding. This post also reminds me of a recent video farce on fashion with Julia Stiles, http://tiny.cc/kLqpr.

Do We Need All These Store Receipts?

  • and said:

On the topic of receipts (& #bigideas), how about James Reynold’s idea to include the mileage of produce on receipts?! For example, imagine leaving a store with the details: Spanish Spinach—958 miles, Bolivian Clementines—6258 miles, South African peas—5979 miles. A simple visualization & further explanation here: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/08/far-foods.phpYes, it’s yet more information, but information that I would welcome (whether on a paper or electronic-emailed ticket). Increasing awareness about the carbon footprint of one’s shopping cart’s contents could enhance the relishing feeling of a trip to the local farmer’s market or better yet, one’s own backyard garden.
