Sad or Cute: Hermit Crab Makes Home in Broken Bottle

Should We Retrofit Our Country Roads for Slow Touring?

  • and said:

Sounds nice — unless you live along one of those roadways, and commute to work. It’d be beyond frustrating to have your daily drive to and from the office clogged with Segways and horses. A huge number of people (most of the U.S. outside city centers, I’m guessing) still depend on reasonably quick personal vehicles to get around – to their jobs, the grocery store, the hospital, schools. Until we convince people to live in urban centers, or improve dedicated commuter routes and light rail networks, I think this might be jumping the gun.

Food Grows On Trees!

Food Grows On Trees!

Urban gathering and gleaning are taking off. Here are six organizations that help people find free, fresh food in the city.

My dad emailed me the other day. His missives are brief and informative—this one was nine words long.

“I’ve had miner’s lettuce four nights in a row.”

During spring in Los Olivos, Califonia, miner’s lettuce (Claytonia perfoliata) is abundant in the woods behind my parents’ house. It’s like spinach but crunchier, and it’s great in a salad.

His email…

Indie 103.1 = Done

  • Posted by: Will Etling
  • on January 15, 2009 at 3:56 pm

Los Angeles radio station Indie 103.1 went to static this morning at 10:00 am. They’re going to keep broadcasting online, according to their website, but they’re on the FM dial no longer.

It’s a sad day. Although I had listened to Indie 103.1 less and less in the last year, the little band I’m in had been on their live shows many times.

It was always an incredibly fun, friendly, and exciting experience. Mark Sovel (aka Mr. Shovel)…

Stump Birds

  • Posted by: Will Etling
  • on December 19, 2008 at 2:38 pm

These birds
are painted on branch stumps a couple blocks from my apartment in Los Feliz, on Rodney Street between Russell and Melbourne. I’ve been meaning to shoot photos of them for at least a month, and when it started raining I was afraid they’d be gone. Fortunately, they’re still there — although a little worse for wear.

Mohawk military parrot is a particular favorite.

Stockholm one-ups Google

  • Posted by: Will Etling
  • on December 12, 2008 at 5:28 pm

I love Google Street View. It’s probably one of my favorite things to do when I run out of Internet to wander — type in a random town and see the sights.  But Street View hasn’t made it to very many European cities yet, and they also haven’t perfected their image processing. Sometimes whole cities are foggy because of condensation on their on-car cameras.

Stockholm has really upped the ante at hitta.se. The images are huge,…

Build cheaper, build greener, help charity.

  • Posted by: Will Etling

I recently finished building a little house in the woods. I wasn’t able to pull it off for Thoreau’s twenty-eight bucks, but the total cost was under $5,000 — pretty decent for for 192 square foot cabin with a porch, lots of windows, insulation, and a tin roof.

One of the biggest helps was Habitat for Humanity’s Restore in Goleta (a few miles north of Santa Barbara.) It’s one of the more recent stores to…

Governator gets zapped

According to a friend, Governor Arnie of California just got a Tesla electric sports car delivered to his house.  I’m going to bet that he didn’t have to pay for it.

People love details, don’t they? The #4 FAQ on the Tesla site is “Will the Tesla Roadster’s stereo work with my iPod?”

Getting to Know the Kindle DX

I was at a wedding last month and got into a conversation with an older gentleman about the web vs. magazines. His single favorite thing about printed mags: the table of contents. That sort of casual, wandering, bouncing story-to-story browsing is something that the web and Kindle haven’t totally nailed yet. It’ll be interesting to see how they try to recreate the “Sunday paper” experience through electronics.
