Transparency: The Growth of Food Stamps

While some economists are declaring the recession over, and although the stock market continues to rise, those on the bottom of the economic ladder are seeing fewer improvements to their day-to-day lives. The number of Americans who receive assistance from the government in the form of food stamps continues to rise—the total number of food stamp recipients is now up to more than 10 percent of the total population. Here is how many people have…

Transparency: Obama’s Effect on Voter Turnout

In the months leading up to the 2008 presidential election, there were big questions about Obama’s potential impact on voter turnout. As someone who appealed to both black voters and young voters (two groups who historically don’t have high levels of voter turnout), would Obama be able to motivate these groups to vote for him in record numbers? Transparency: Is Cash for Clunkers Working?

The Cash for Clunkers program, which gives up to a $4,500 rebate if they trade in a car with low fuel economy for one with high fuel economy, was re-funded by Congress last week. While the program’s impact on the environment and the economy is still being debated, it did spark hundreds of thousands of purchases of new cars with much higher fuel efficiency. This week’s original Transparency is a look at the top 10…

Transparency: The Best and Worst Cities to Look for Work

We hear a lot about the continually rising national unemployment rate (currently at 9.7 percent), but the recession isn’t hitting each part of the country with the same severity. Our latest original Transparency is a look at the metropolitan areas with the highest and lowest unemployment rates in the country. If you’re looking to start a new life somewhere, may we recommend Oklahoma City.
