Sierra Club’s Top 10 “Green” Schools List

  • Posted by: Isis Krause
  • on August 21, 2009 at 1:58 pm

Sierra Club recent magazine issue unveiled their recent list of the top “green” universities across the nation.

The issue looks at the increasing trend of “green” as a reason to choose one school over another.

“Ten years ago, I don’t remember any student asking me about green campuses,” says Steven Roy Goodman, a college admissions strategist at Topcolleges.com. “Now it’s quite common for students to be keenly interested in how environmentally responsible colleges are.”

“Today, two-thirds of university applicants say…

Dump the Summer Heat

  • Posted by: Isis Krause
  • on July 20, 2009 at 5:23 pm

Bringing new meaning to the phrase “dumpster diving” is an urban revamp project/private party in industrial Brooklyn. Dumpsters are given the Cinderella treatment, transforming them into swimming pools. Add a few pool chairs and an iPod, and you’ve got a “lo-fi urban country club”.  A lucky few are privately invited to join the refreshing summer fun to escape the New York heat.

“There aren’t that many places to swim in New York…and dumpsters are everywhere;…

Time + Paper = Money ?

  • on July 20, 2009 at 3:46 pm

I always admire those who solve problems in the most seemingly implausible ways.  Such as this: Ithaca, New York has designed local-use only cash called ‘Ithaca Hours’. With the current economic crisis, loss of jobs and little money for local economies, why not bypass The Federal Reserve and keep everything local?

00:00 / 00:00 00:00

“Ithaca Hours is a local currency system that promotes local economic strength and community self-reliance in ways which will support economic and…

Summer Sunscreen

  • on July 15, 2009 at 6:39 pm

00:00 / 00:00 00:00

Since 1978 the Food and Drug Administration has been promising to provide sunscreen standards to help the public understand what they are buying and how well it will work (if at all). This hasn’t happened though, so the Environmental Working Group has been taking matters into their own hands. They do an annual review of thousands of sunscreens to test their effectiveness and how many hazardous chemicals they contain. Their results are astounding.

iPhone Apps Turned Green

  • Posted by: Isis Krause
  • on July 15, 2009 at 2:57 pm

I always cringe at environmental paradoxs: using plastic bags at the farmers market, buying organic produce grown in Chile, taking showers twice as long because you have a low-flow shower head, the list goes on.

But here’s one that I found oddly appealing: Green iPhone Apps. Yes there are plenty of rare minerals inside my iPhone and it consumes a lot of energy to charge, but perhaps that can somewhat be canceled out by one…

I do think bike-sharing could work. I think a great place to start would be all of the school campuses in Los Angeles. It would be interesting to see how a bike-sharing network would increase the demand for bicycle lanes. In a chicken-or-the-egg kind of way, which came first? The bike-sharing network to increase riders, or the bike lanes to promote increased ridership?

I think it really depends on the transparency. This example transparency is very linear, and so scrolling back and forth easily allows you to view it all. Yet on other transparencies (especially those with many details or those not easily read left to right), the flash zoom style would be more beneficial.

Will our Streets Make Room for us?

  • and said:

My street (Veteran Ave, right below Wilshire in Los Angeles) is already quite busy, yet also very narrow. I think the only way to accommodate more cars on this street would be to have two one-way lanes. I am more worried about being next to a major freeway (405), and the extra traffic that would bring. I think this brings up the even more important issue of how public transportation is going to change in the future. 50 years might sound far away, but already the West-LA Extension through UCLA to Santa Monica is supposed to take 20 years. We better get cracking if subway lines need to cover all of Los Angeles to accommodate doubling of population.

Thanks for the comment Nathan. I was surprised the picture didn’t elicit more reaction from others! It surely is a disturbing trend to wrap everything in plastic without second thought. I think better pricing systems for the amount of trash we are allowed to throw away would immediately lessen the amount of unnecessary plastic from packaging. I’ll be sure to steer clear from Fresh & Easy’s.
