HIV Travel Ban Finally Lifted

Said President Obama on lifting the ban: “Twenty-two years ago, in a decision rooted in fear rather than fact, the United States instituted a travel ban on entry into the country for people living with HIV/AIDS. Now, we talk about reducing the stigma of this disease — yet we’ve treated a visitor living with it as a threat. We lead the world when it comes to helping stem the AIDS pandemic — yet we are…

Stupid Criminals: Burglars Use Black Magic Marker On Their Faces As Disguise (VIDEO)

Two burglars are in the running for the worst disguise ever after they were arrested trying to rob a home with permanent black magic marker scrawled all over their faces. As MSNBC’s Willie Geist put it,

Why You Should Worry About Climate Change Even If You Don’t Think It Is Going To Happen « Legal Planet: Environmental Law and Policy

Sounds like Sam Savage’s book, The Flaw of Averages, is worth a read. First of all, the title is awesome, and second, it contains this quotable quote: “Plans based on average assumptions are wrong on average.”

‘Balloon Boy’ = ‘Bologna Boy’

Well – it was really his Dad’s fault. Did you the kid puke twice on national television? Says CNN: “The wife of a Colorado father at the center of the ‘balloon boy’ saga told authorities that the giant helium balloon was specifically created for a hoax to draw media attention, according to court documents released Friday.”

NY Times Movie Review – Antichrist – In Satan’s Church, an Eden Besieged

Apparently making this film made Lars Von Trier feel better. Does it make you feel better? I haven’t seen it yet but I’ve enjoyed most of his films. Looking forward to this one.

YouTube – Solar Tower Energy

  • Posted by: John Durkin

This is a future solar chimney project in Australia. I’ve always thought these things could have a dual function, where the floor is flooded with a thin layer of seawater, and the interior of the tower is grooved with channels draining clean condensate from the evaporated water vapor, providing both power and desalinated water.

Update: When You’re Getting High-speed Rail

  • and said:

Anonymous mentions how little $8 billion is and contrasts it to *untold* amounts we’ve spent on wars recently. I’d like to also point out that we spent somewhere between $700 billion and $1.3 trillion buying worthless garbage from Wall Street corporations at the end of Bush’s party in the White House. Massive corporations addicted to gambling on mortgage-backed and other exotic securities received this money in exchange for their hot-potato assets which had become valued at close to nothing. It’s like some bazillionaires lost their fortunes at the bakarat table, but just before they head off to the soup kitchen, the president of the Casino shows up and gives them all a trillion dollars to share – if they’ll come back to the table and play some more, because there aren’t too many bazillionaires after all, and if these guys aren’t playing bakarat then no one is, and the Casino isn’t really making any money off the nickel slots. At least that’s how I understood it. Of course what do I know about the mysterious ways of the Fed, the Treasury, Wall Street, and big business…In any case, the “bailout” amounted to around twice the defense budget (~$480 billion), which is the largest slice of the federal government’s discretionary spending budget. In fact, $700 billion It’s nearly 1/3 of the entire annual federal spending budget. I don’t quite get it, still. No matter, soon we’ll all forget. Perhaps most of us already have.So yes, $8 billion is somewhat laughable. Also, California’s high speed rail project alone is projected to cost $40 billion to construct. Anyway, why would we spend a few billion dollars on fancy infrastructure that will create jobs, benefit millions, and last for generations when we can spend hundreds of billions to fund a few already-rich guys’ jet set party lifestyles for a few more years? It’s all so confusing.
