For too many years the Secretary of Agriculture has been the lackey of the industrial food business. This is your chance to call for some change.
What Alice Waters, Michael Pollan, Mark Bittman are saying is that we just need to get back to eating food. It does not all need to be local and organic. For most of the country that is not practical. However, if you can just stick to buying raw ingredients and cook them yourself, you are doing OK. If it is local ingredients are available , then you can support your local economy. When you but from farmers markets, the majority of your money goes to the farmer and not corporate agribusiness. Finally everyone needs to cut down on meat consumption. The average American eats 1 1/2 pounds of meet a day, way more than our bodies and our environment can handle. Meat has tremendous impact on our heath and our environment. 18% of greenhouse gases are from the production of meat. That is the second largest producer. Keep food real, keep it simple and keep it local (orgainc if possible) and you will not only benefit our entire planet and economy will too.
