Kapler23 is a Teacher living in Baltimore.
I just moved from Detroit to Baltimore. I am a member of Teach For America and currently in my first year of teaching. I am an English and Journalism teacher for 9th and 10th grades. As a Detroiter, now living in Baltimore, I was absolutely shocked to see Mitt Romney come out with this article in the NY Times. As “Michigan’s Son”, he is making a bold statement that will not be welcomed by his fellow Michiganders. Although I am shocked he even has the nickname of “Michigan’s Son”, I think he will be better suited as the prodigal son, because he will not be returning for a long time.Although I hate to read what he is saying, I think he does have a good point and is right. Sometimes the truth hurts. As several friends and family members continue to lose jobs, Detroit must restructure. Everybody in Michigan is hurting badly as our unemployment rate hit another all time high, it is best to look towards the future and restructure.I do not know much about Seattle’s problems with Boeing a few decades ago, but maybe Detroit could learn a lesson and begin to not put all of its eggs in one basket. We will always be the Motor City, just maybe something else now too.
This is quite impressive to see what has been accomplished thus far. However, as a new member of Teach For America (affiliated with Americorps), we need as much help as we can get in regards to the inequalities in education. Please consider tutoring, teaching, and volunteering within the school systems around you, specifically lower performing schools. Do not be idle.
I am shocked and amazed that my former mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick from Detroit did not make this list.

I definitely enjoy Madrid’s logo as well. I think it is one that eight years from now will still be a good decision.
