I tend to arrive at school every day just before the opening bells rings. Today, I actually showed up early and found a student already waiting in my classroom. The student is one who I have never shared a solid conversation with and not one to ever volunteer to speak up in a class discussion. However,.. Read & Discuss

As a Detroiter, now living in Baltimore, I was absolutely shocked to see Mitt Romney come out with this article in the NY Times. As “Michigan’s Son”, he is making a bold statement that will not be welcomed by his fellow Michiganders. Although I am shocked he even has the nickname of “Michigan’s Son”, I think he will be better suited as the prodigal son, because he will not be returning for a long time.Although I hate to read what he is saying, I think he does have a good point and is right. Sometimes the truth hurts. As several friends and family members continue to lose jobs, Detroit must restructure. Everybody in Michigan is hurting badly as our unemployment rate hit another all time high, it is best to look towards the future and restructure.I do not know much about Seattle’s problems with Boeing a few decades ago, but maybe Detroit could learn a lesson and begin to not put all of its eggs in one basket. We will always be the Motor City, just maybe something else now too.

This is quite impressive to see what has been accomplished thus far. However, as a new member of Teach For America (affiliated with Americorps), we need as much help as we can get in regards to the inequalities in education. Please consider tutoring, teaching, and volunteering within the school systems around you, specifically lower performing schools. Do not be idle.

Role Model

This past week in my advisory class, I had to have my boys make a list of five male role models.  I decided to participate as well with this task. What was in my opinion an easy task became rather challenging for my students. I had questions and statements consisting of, “Do they have to be males?”.. Read & Discuss

The insecurity of a helping verb

I have always been one not to tell friends back home of the stories that would reinforce negative beliefs about teaching in the inner city. I also find that, generally speaking, when I say I teach in an inner city, people automatically equate that to meaning, "Oh, you teach black kids."I started with.. Read & Discuss

I am officially going into my 10th week of teaching. I cannot believe it has been this long already. Friday marks the end of our first quarter and I realize I will be going home to Detroit in two months!  I had the pleasure of chaperoning the homecoming dance at my school this weekend.
