Public Art Party!

  • Posted by: kylafullenwider

Anyone who lives in LA (or visits frequently) knows how much space there is here. Too much space sometimes. So it is refreshing when some of it is used for something other than soda campaigns. The city of Beverly Hills has smartly offered up some of their (very expensive) outdoor space for Yayoi Kusama’s sculptures, including her ten foot tall tulips. If you only ever drive through Beverly Hills on your way to the beach you…

Bicycle Chic

  • Posted by: kylafullenwider
  • on April 16, 2009 at 4:20 pm

Can fashion take on car culture? Maybe. The NY Times has a great piece in its Style section today outlining one company’s attempt to rebrand biking, making it sexy and suitable for the tie wearing, Steven Alan shirt set. Just another marketing ploy? Probably. But one that could actually have some tangible benefits for the rest of us.

Car culture is so pervasive in most parts of the US that it is hard
to imagine anything usurping its influence.…

Bike for Cash: Cyclists Now Get Paid to Commute

  • Posted by: kylafullenwider
  • on April 7, 2009 at 6:39 pm

After the much discussed post last week on a proposed bike tax (where I threw out a pie in the sky idea that bikers get a tax incentive) imagine my bewildered shock when I found out today that bikers are actually getting tax incentives. In the US.
Starting January 1, 2009-  thanks to Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR)- bikers are now eligible to receive a $20 monthly reimbursement from their employers. After seven…

Protest and Public Art on Google Street View

  • Posted by: kylafullenwider
  • on April 3, 2009 at 1:13 pm

Flasher welcomes the Google Van to her town

The Guardian reports that the small British village of Broughton has managed to block Google Street view by creating a human wall. It’s not the first time the now recognizable Google vehicle- notable for its roof-top 360 camera- has been intercepted by
residents of a city. Last year the public art project Street With a View
created a fictional street scene on Pittsburgh’s north side. A fake parade, marathon and sword…

Starter Garden

  • Posted by: kylafullenwider
  • on April 3, 2009 at 1:40 am

First there was the Victory Garden, then came Michelle Obama’s much discussed Whitehouse Garden, and now, it seems, gardens are popping up everywhere.

Back in 2005 Fritz Haeg’s brilliant idea
to turn front lawns into functioning gardens or edible estates was
still considered an art project. Now it is art come to life. With the
newish concept of a home based garden as more function than form Haeg’s
work is a testament to how art can help bring about social…

NY Times Goes Local

  • Posted by: kylafullenwider
  • on March 3, 2009 at 3:10 am

The NY Times just did something really smart: it went local. Their new blog, called, um, The Local, will do almost everything a small local paper might have done in the past (assuming the paper was smart, liberal and tech savvy). Since it’s inception one day ago a neighborhood Park Ranger has posted a sweet piece on Olmstead’s influence on Ft. Greene, a neighbor’s financial woes have been shared and sledding footage was uploaded after the recent snow…

How Might We Leverage Informed Intuition for Decision-making?

  • and said:

It seems like the checks and balances of “network intuition” could provide advantages over a strictly logic based system (e.g. measuring the impact of art programs is often tricky). Not sure if Wikipedia is the best analogy here but it does seem relevant in that they have proven (for better and for worse) that new kinds of network based system models can work for all kinds of purposes– and that the checks and balances are often better.

Bike-Sharing in Boston

  • and said:

If you build it they will come, be it drivers or bikers. Study after study shows that when we add more lanes to highways they inevitably attract more drivers (and hence more traffic jams). The same goes for bike lanes. If we create more hospitable biking infrastructure and easier access to bikes we will have more bikers on the road. Simple.
