I LOVE this idea. It actually annoys me when people use 1.25 inch margins because that’s not standard formatting for MLA or APA. (You can tell I’ve been in school too long…)

Any time I’m printing something for myself, though – especially notes or something that’s going to take up a LOT of paper – I use 0.5 inch margins! I also change the font size to 10 point. To top it all off, I use the lowest ink setting possible and print on BOTH sides of the page! My whole reasons for doing so are those exactly stated in this article. Why waste all that paper on something I won’t look at again in a year – or even a few months?

Unfortunately, a formal paper requires standard 1 inch margins, 12 point font, double-spacing, and single-sided print. This, of course, amounts to a HUGE waste – which is why I try to make up for it with my personal printing.
