Learn about Your Town’s Sister Cities

Mary Slosson

It’s a big world out there. Our seven billion member strong human family is spread out over nearly 200 million square miles. We connect and find community in our backyards, among our neighbors and co-workers and friends. We also strive for connection in surprising ways: in online communities from Silicon Valley to the Silicon Savannah, from Nollywood to Bollywood, in chat rooms and on Twitter and right here at good.is.

This week, take some time to learn about your town’s sister cities and the unexpected web of connections we humans have spun around the globe. We are artists, scientists, engineers and teachers, scattered by happenstance but connected by choice. We're all slowly spinning on this incredible, life-giving chunk of rock in space, together.

Great idea. In Cape Town, South Africa, we're about to launch a system of 'Twinning Neighbourhoods'. The aim is to connect more affluent hoods with hoods in need, with a view to creating a symbiotic relationship. Perhaps this could be done a global level too?

Los Angeles has 25 sister cities, and I've only been to two of them (San Salvador and London). I'd love to visit Tehran. Time to get traveling!

My town (San Francisco) has 21 sister cities. Sadly, I've only been to four of them. First on my learning list: Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

    Thanks for the suggestion, Mary.
