The Cooper Lumen Design Challenge exists in answer to the devastation caused by Superstorm Sandy in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. It is an innovative, cross-disciplinary design challenge for students at Cooper Union, aimed at creating a working prototype for a solar-powered public WiFi hotspot. The resulting design(s) will become candidates for deployment in the WiFi-NY People’s Emergency Network, which will place these units in these neighborhoods for the future safety and support of all residents many of whom are low-income families and the elderly.

In addition to aiding NYC neighborhoods, this technology can benefit
