The Odyssey Initiative is a team of three experienced educators who crossed the country to identify successful practices from schools of every kind before they design and open a model public school. This video focuses on a school in New Mexico whose mission is to equip young people who love to design and build things to become leaders in the construction profession. The school works to serve young people who have limited means to have successful careers by caring for their intellectual, physical and emotional well-being as students.

Steps for this DO
1) View the Odyssey video.
2) Click on the "Collaboratory" link
3) Join thousands of educators from around the country in discussing how schools should be redesigned to meet students' needs.

I definitely appreciated looking at this video and agree with its message that the best learning occurs when we, as students, are actively engaged in the process and understand that what they're learning is relevant to their everyday lives and to their futures. These two factors-- engagement and relevance-- will ensure that we, as students, are motivated to learn.

Creative teaching, fosters creativity! Innovative teaching, fosters innovation! Out-the-box teaching, fosters out-the-box thinking!

this is great but isn't this what students and their advocates have been saying for years?

Thanks for your comment. Can you clarify what you mean by "this?" What specifically in the video do you think has been in conversation by students and advocated?

I just mean the fact that, while not always in a formal presentation or in an official matter, students have always chafed at the current style and method of teaching in our public schools. As a student myself not too long ago, only two years, I remember thinking, even in my honor classes--which were a joke, really--that the teachers were either just giving us busy work and doing their best to finish the day as much as we were...or they really didn't know of any other way to teach us. Or weren't willing. Or weren't allowed to. Anyway, I just mean that students always wanted more hands-on-learning, more fieldtrips, and more dynamic teaching methods.

Ka-Ta & Cyrill, Thanks for your comments! We absolutely agree that teachers need to be modeling and driving the change needed in our classrooms and educational system. That's why we support teacherpreneurs who stay in the classroom but also spend half their time working on projects to reinvent teaching and learning. We also have a discussion lab on our site to specifically foster conversations and innovation around redesigning schools. We partnered with the Odyssey Initiative because we loved that teachers were doing the research and building their school based on the innovative models they witnessed around the country.
