An open letter to Facebook posted by Women, Action & the Media (WAM!) calls for the company to "recognize speech that trivializes or glorifies violence against girls and women."
The letter was sent after three teenagers were recently arrested for allegedly posting a video to Facebook showing them raping a 12-year-old girl at gunpoint. A coalition of more than 40 agencies and advocacy groups have signed the letter and are urging Facebook users to notify companies if and when their ads run alongside content that encourages, or makes light of, sexual assault.
The aim is to give the issue some teeth by targeting Facebook's revenue stream to elicit a response and a change in policy. You can also help WAM! and others end gender-based hate speech on Facebook by getting the word out and messaging these companies.
