Las Vegas Teacher Helps Students Code Without Computers. Help Her!

Center for Teaching Quality

When CTQ professor and teacherpreneur John Holland saw this video, he couldn't help but think: if only this teacher was given the resources she needed...THIS is a true teacherpreneur who needs support! He asks "How can we create space, time, and reward for more teachers like these?" Give back to a teacher who inspires not only her students, but all of us who care about innovation in public schools.

I can't believe that kids are handwriting code in Bev's classroom. How are they able to see the results of their work? Still- the act of writing it out most likely helps them memorize it better. Would love to see computers in her classroom. Thanks for sharing.

When learning CSS and PHP, I was doing everything in notepad, which offers no live validation or even basic line-to-line marking allowing me to trace back errors. It made me pay attention more to order, something that was slowly lost as I moved to dreamweaver. We need to get these kids computers, but much like line pencil drafting, they'll learn the often neglected practice of keeping things tight and coherent. This teacher's will to give them at least this kind of practice is amazing. I wonder what kind of computers they'll accept. I'm sure the CS department at my school would love to offload their turned over inventory.

Good idea to to get schools or even businesses who have old computers to partner up with teachers like her. CTQ, do you know of any sites that connect teachers to those types of resources?
