Make This Awesome '33 Ways to Stay Creative' List a Part of Your Life

Liz Dwyer

This list pops up on the web every few months—the Steampunk group on Facebook is the latest to share. What would happen if most people followed its recommendations instead of just clicking "like"? How would our society change if schools posted these and then operated accordingly? (Caveat for the kids: We'd have to nix “drink coffee”!) Of course the best thing about lists is crossing things off of them, so c'mon, let's commit to putting some of these suggestions into practice.

This list just put a big smile on my face. It's like somebody else rewrote The Rules to match my priorities. Why didn't I think of that?

Sometimes routine jobs can stifle creativity. Even teaching, despite being around the exciting and new energy of young people, can become stale. This list is a good kick in the butt! Of course I practice most of this list already! https://twitter.com/ttrspks

So true about how teaching can become stale--it is all too easy to just be like, "This is how I taught fractions last year so let me go on and do that again." When I first posted this list, I thought about it through the lens of how do we facilitate student creativity, but what if PLC's or EdCamps were to share this list and try some of these ideas out? It could produce some fresh approaches that keep everyone--teacher and student--engaged.

I used the math creativity list in an online course. People said it helped. We also had some discussion on how creativity is not WHAT you do, but HOW you do it. This one's harder to capture in a list...

I am very surprised that there's not something on here about being active. My best ideas come to me on a run, during yoga or in dance class!

This is pretty awesome! It gives you a new perspective.

Having loads of fun with this, especially all the 'new experience' points like watching foreign films, going to new places - feel so much better in life when not doing same old, stale stuff. Get more rest, now there's a great idea!

    • Angela CrossAngela Cross

Question for Matt and Liz, do you save your notebooks?

      • Liz DwyerLiz Dwyer

Yes, I have most of them--so incredible to see the ideas I jotted down when I was a teenager.

    • Liz DwyerLiz Dwyer

Me too! I've been dragging notebooks around for most of my life and if I don't have one to jot ideas, observations, and thoughts down, at this point, I can't function.

I sketch and jot constantly & when I find myself without pencil and paper, I use my iPhone to scribble thoughts and snap pictures. I'm looking for a great drawing app... any suggestions?

      • Angela CrossAngela Cross

Totally with the notebooks. My boyfriend is always amused at how many I end up having. One for song writing, one for important things to remember, one for mysteries I want to solve - I'm overflowing at times :) Question for Matt and Liz, do you save your notebooks?

      • Feel GoodFeel Good

With you on that. My hubby and I have always been the notebook kids. From lists to great ideas and business decisions - couldn't get through the day without.

Printed it out, decorated it and highlighted the ones I want to do first and put it on my wardrobe door to see whenever I walk past it.

    • Liz DwyerLiz Dwyer

That is SUCH a great idea. I'm going to print it on a nice piece of paper and frame it.

  • Feel GoodFeel Good

Such a great list; collaborate, write great ideas down, do more of what makes you happy, have fun and break the rules - these alone will give us all a fun and feel good life surely... Just off to find a bunch of creative people.

My favorite is "Stop trying to be somebody else's perfect."

    • Sydney BrushwoodSydney Brushwood

I agree. People need to stop trying to impress everyone else. I need to take my own advice lol, but I strongly agree with this 100% Be your own person, whatever that is. Do what makes you happy and fuck the rest.
