CrowdRise

For more than 40 years, the Barefoot College has been work to improve the quality of life of the rural poor. By demystifying technology and by putting the access, ownership and control in the hands of the rural poor, this Barefoot approach has enabled thousands of people in hundreds of villages to become solar and water engineers, teachers, doctors, architects, broadcasters and entrepreneurs.

Partner with us to provide the equipment that 90 trained women Barefoot solar engineers need to electrify and bring clean drinking water to 4,500 families. Every commitment of $125,000 electrifies 200 homes, provides clean drinking water to more than 600 people and unlocks another $30,000 in partnership funding from the government of India.

You can help us to bring electricity and clean drinking water to 4,500 families.

I was fortunate enough to visit the Barefoot College a year or so back with another co-founder of The Shop for Change. Wow, what an experience. I thought hearing Bunker Roy was good but hey, walking the talk is another level of impressive. Congratulations on supporting the craft workers, Tilonia. We are huge advocates and I love my hand crafted bed cover (that I picked up while visiting the College). Exceptional quality, exceptional crafts and people. Very best of luck into the future.

Bunker Roy and his work with the Barefoot College is truly inspirational. Most people don't know that the Barefoot College is the first institution where you don’t need a certificate or degree of any kind to enroll. It works with the poor, for the poor, to uplift the poor. Its work is centered around providing indigenous, ingeniously crafted real-world solutions to the problems that affect marginalized populations in villages around the world. Challenging all norms, the Barefoot College successfully teaches and trains Barefoot Professionals to become scientists, doctor and engineers without a single written word.

I featured them on my blog a few months back: http://inspiringideasblog.wordpress.com/2013/04/24/the-barefoot-college/
