We need innovation solutions to the biggest problems the world faces. Plastic is everywhere—in the products we buy, in landfills, and throughout the oceans (not just in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, but in tiny pieces around the world). Here's a contest calling for new answers- products, materials, or, most interesting, new ideas for redesigning systems. The contest closes March 10.

In the name of going with the flow; as long as the plastic is ending up in one spot in the ocean, scoop it all together and make 'Trashistan" an island based on plastic garbage!
In addition, why not make, with all the Styrofoam, artificial hunting posts for polar bears to replace the ones that have melted away? That's two ideas. This site is hard to navigate I might add. With this post I am submitting two ideas. I hope they get home.

There are a number of good videos on YouTube about the plastic in the ocean. If you have access to Netflix streaming, watch "Bag It". The plastic isn't staying whole to be cleaned up. It's broken down into small particles referred to as "plastic soup" which can be caught and examined with plankton nets, but not effectively collected. (It won't go away, but it gets tiny.) It outnumbers plankton at least 40 to 1, killing a number of creatures that can no longer get food since there's too much plastic in the way of the tiny amounts of food left compared to it.
