Thank you, my fellow adventurer! And who loves an adventure more than kids? Love your work and your life. Lucky when they're one and the same.

    • Alisha Gaddis

Agreed and Agreed! Thanks for the positivity! YES!

Number 10 really does sum it all up. My husband and I are road trippers too. When I'm not on the road I'm cruising around sites like this and it is how I stumbled onto your wonderful article and the band. Ya'll are so much fun! I'm a drama instructor for school aged kids in the process of moving back to L.A. from Albuquerque. In fact, I've just returned from picking up moving boxes. What a find you are, and it's not even noon!

    • Alisha Gaddis

Wow! Thank Terri! That is so cool! When you get to LA- you will have to look us up. The vast world is so small! Thanks again for your kind words!

  • Nate Bagley

This is so perfect. I'm getting ready to go on a long 2-month road trip in a few weeks. My copilot and I will have to keep these things in mind. Some of the greatest adventures come when you make the wrong right turns. I love it.

    • Alisha Gaddis

Thank you so much Nate! And two months! That is awesome! Make tons of right- wrong turns!

  • Alex Johnson

Great post (I really like #5 &6) I want to do a trip like this. You have definitely inspired me.

    • Alisha Gaddis

Wow! Thanks so much Alex! Eating and chatting and listening and sharing are such amazing parts of life! Thank you so much for reading!

I love this piece! My husband, two kids and I spent the entire month of July visiting eight states... Your writing made me laugh out loud but also made me whelm up with tears, longing for the wonderful, adventurous days we spent together in the car and seeing these beautiful United States...

The very best part of the trip for me was meeting all sorts of extraordinary people from all over the world. Because of them, we went on the best hikes, ate at the most delicious local restaurants and saw sights free of tourists and known only to locals.

You are right, every person has a story and what a joy and blessing it was for us to hear them. We are richer having heard them...

I am printing out your beautiful piece and sticking it into the journal we kept during our trip.

    Thank you!!

    • Alisha Gaddis

Oh my gosh Sienagirl! Your comment made my heart sing! I love that you did this with your family and that you can totally relate! That is so amazing that you had a wonderful experience of your own. That is what it is all about right!?

Thank YOU for sharing! it inspired me! Much love!

I travel the country for photography, my own business, and I have to say from experience - this is ALL solid advice - though I'm guessing at the bubblebath - I must try that one!

    • Alisha Gaddis

How amazing that you get to travel so much for photography! Love it! Thanks for reading and safe and fabulous travels!

  • Cara Kitagawa-Sellers

This is an amazing piece! It really captures the perspective that traveling can bring.
My favorite line: We are all guest stars in each other’s biopics.

    • Alisha Gaddis

Thank you so much Cara! That is really kind of you! So glad you enjoyed it!

  • Erik Tilkemeier

Great story, and attitude, Alisha! We have driven Route 66 several times while avoiding as much of Interstate 40 as possible. The Old Highway has some obstacles, but the sites are well worth it! Enjoy your new route home.

    • Alisha Gaddis

That is so awesome you did that Erik! Wow! Wasn't it great! Thanks so much for sharing and thank you for reading! Wanderlust unite!

  • Mallory Baches

I just loved this, Alisha! Some really excellent advice about how to live a full life in there, both while on the road and back at home. But with a 7 year old daughter myself, what I really appreciated was how you gave yours such an authentic experience (collection of experiences!) while still doing something that was meaningful and relevant to you and your husband. The anti-Disney vacation, I suppose you'd call it. And I'm now fully inspired to finally plan that cross-country road trip I'd been saying my little family would someday take...thanks for telling your story and getting me going on experiencing my own!

    • Alisha Gaddis

Wow Mallory! I am so inspired by hearing from you! Thanks for reading the article! Hope the tips travel well with you wherever you may go! And I am sure your 7 yr old will love wherever the road may take you all!

  • Stef McDonald

Seriously great advice. "Eat like a local" especially–not just for the great food but for the great people you meet finding those places and enjoying those dishes.

    • Alisha Gaddis

Thanks Stef! We really love digging into the local culture...and their plates! YUM!

  • Chelsea Spann

I needed this, especially before Labor Day. It also reminds me that you can do all these things at home - feel like a traveler in your own city. We're making a stay-cation this weekend, and traveling what seems like foreign lands to us on the westside. I am now inspired - thank you!

    • Alisha Gaddis

Wow! Thanks so much Chelsea! And YES to a traveler in your own city! I LOVE a staycation. We love to go re-discover little pockets of town (we live in LA): Chinatown, Downtown, Koreatown. Even trying a different takeout place or turning down a new street can feel adventurous- because it is! Have a FABULOUS Labor Day! And Thank YOU!

      • Chelsea Spann

As if you could inspire me more!? I'm taking a new way home from work today.

        • Alisha Gaddis

Ha! Then I will too! It's a deal! Hope you see something fabulous and special!

  • Alessandra Rizzotti

    1) I am so happy to see a great positive attitude being taught to your daughter, and spread throughout your creativity, as well as spread to all your fans! Love the little family stories.
    2) Your openess to explore is inspiring and thanks for reminding me. Just in time for Labor Day Weekend!!!

PS: I love that you love organizing - just like me. I need to remember to let go of that too sometimes!

So very sweet of you to offer to share music with teachers for free and acknowledge how hard they work. YAY!

    • Alisha Gaddis

Thanks Liz! We really mean it too! Please pass the message along to anyone who needs music in their classroom! Thanks so much for reading!
