There is strength in numbers as well - it doesn't take long for the presence of cyclists to beget more cyclists and in turn change the culture safer - for an example of this, head to pretty much any medium to large sized city in the Netherlands. All drivers look out for cyclists and many roundabouts have separated, protected bike lanes.

Even the most timid of cyclists ends up feeling confident because people are so used to being aware of the presence of bicycles.

And don't stand in the bike lane or double park your car there! Bedankt!
