Surely there should be some way to meet people for a purpose without the awkwardness of walking up to strangers!

Meetup sorta works. But you're still with a bunch of people you don't know. Try http://www.townhang.com , it's basically a site where people post something fun that they want to do and you can hang out with them in real life.

Thanks. I see what you mean about Meetup. I'll give townhang a try.

If or when you move into a new apt./house , take the time to knock on doors that surround you and introduce yourself as the new neighbor = everybody is nervous about " Who's moving in ?" & in this way you put to rest any ?'s and assure them " If you see me I'm not a robber >:-) ...and you now know the faces of your neighbors which inturn usually rates a " Nice Day ! " when you see each other . I've done this all over the US & only once did I meet a cumudgeon ( sp?) and he ended up to be an okay neighbor .......Step forward , it's a great oppurtunity !

Just have the balls to say "hi", that's usually all it takes :]

In college instead of having a dog like everyone else I scored a pet duck. Cost me $5. Amazing icebreaker. The first question was always, "Is that your duck?"

What I'm trying to say is get a duck if you can, way cheaper than dog and much cooler :)

Nice ! I am suddenly prompted to get a pet duck !
