A Couple Quits Their Jobs to Build a Recycled House in the Woods

Ever wanted a house in the mountains? It's the sort of thing you might daydream about on a hike, but after photographer Nick Olson and fashion designer Lilah Horwitz were inspired by the idea on their first date, they actually built a home. Less than a year after their first walk through the mountains of West Virginia, they'd quit their jobs, collected recycled building materials, and finished creating a house with a full wall of windows to watch the sunset.

    Inspiring. But, what about the practicalities? What about when the local municipality demands planning and zoning documentation? Otherwise I'd do it too!

      Good question. I think they were just lucky to happen to have land in the middle of the woods (not to say that it was necessarily legal, even so). I'm inspired to try a very tiny version of this myself— maybe Alessandra's suggestion of a greenhouse, below...

      Yeah, I wonder that too...and how cold in the winter. Probably not the most energy-efficient wall. :)
