A Win for Ron Finley and Urban Gardening in LA

Stef McDonald

GOOD 100 member Ron Finley recently helped secure a victory for urban gardeners in Los Angeles. After being cited for violating a law that prohibits planting on the area between a sidewalk and a curb, Finley petitioned the LA City Council, which then voted unanimously to wave enforcement of the outdated law. As Councilman Mike Bonin said in the Los Angeles Daily News, "We deal with a lot of big issues, but this is one that helps shape community character." Go, guerrilla gardeners!

Ron is a true inspiration! Making LA (our home), a better place. Thanks for sharing, Stef!

So glad that Ron Finley paved the way for showing the city council that guerilla gardening just makes our community better. In this case, I'm reminded of our community member Patrick, who hacked community development in Dallas, TX! http://www.good.is/members/patrickm02l. Hey Ron, if you see this, any new plans to work with food deserts? Would love to know if you're doing anything else in that space.

Thanks for the shout out Alessandra. I love Ron's TED talk and his priceless quotes.

“Gardening is the most therapeutic and defiant act you can do, especially in the inner city. Plus, you get strawberries.”

“If kids grow kale, kids eat kale. If they grow tomatoes, they eat tomatoes. But when none of this is presented to them, if they're not shown how food affects the mind and the body, they blindly eat whatever you put in front of them.”

“We gotta flip the script on what a gangsta is — if you ain't a gardener, you ain't gangsta.”
