Camera for the Blind Calls Out Objects and Color with Hand Gestures

Using Microsoft's Kinect sensor, researchers at the University of Nevada crafted a camera that can remember and call out nearby objects with simple hand gestures. Called the Gestural Interface for Remote Spatial Perception, or GIST, the neck-hanging device gives the blind a modern tool to probe and navigate their environment, turning their held-out fist or wave of their index finger into commands to list distance or dominant color in the area. Users can also build a library to recall friends.
