People have told me that I have a California accent and many have guessed I'm from CA so it must be SOMETHING.

Being an LA native, I feel like I should weigh in here. There are a lot of transplants in Los Angeles, which I think makes identifying an accent harder. I first noticed the California accent when I headed to Boston for college. I remember looking for other California natives by listening to their speech--I was look for a slow, relaxed tone.

I'm curious to know what comes from the Stanford research!

I always try to talk faster, aware of having that California drawl of speaking pretty slowly. But I think there are definitely differences between Northern and Southern California accents - Northern being a little less Valley girl and a little more "yo."
