Don't Call Him Steve: Research Shows Dolphins Have Names, Respond to Unique Whistle

Within every dolphin pod there is a "signature whistle" for each individual member--a unique chirp that serves as their name. Working off the coast of Scotland, a team of researchers noticed that wild dolphins would often announce themselves in whistle, much like excited stage actors. Playing back the "signature whistle" resulted in individuals responding to the sound of their "name," as if to say, "Yup, I'm here!" The finding suggests that identity plays a large role in dolphin communication.
