Drug-Resistant Bacteria in Livestock also Found in Workers Handling Them

Drug-resistant strains of bacteria are not only found in livestock on industrial farms, but now are being spotted in the workers handling them. Looking at pig farmers in North Carolina, a study published by the open-access journal PLOS One found a higher prevalence of bacteria resistant to tetracycline--used to treat infections like chlamydia--in workers at industrial farms than those at small ones. Also detected were "drug-resistant strains with multiple characteristics linked to livestock."

    Terrifying. I wonder if this will push Bittman to go 24 hour vegan, instead of just "vegan before 6"?
