Escaped Bronx Zoo Cobra Joins Twitter for Punny Adventures

The venomous Egyptian cobra on the loose is tweeting from around New York, taunting Charlie Sheen, and hunting for Rebbecca Black.

One of the savviest Twitter bloggers around is a deadly escaped cobra. On Friday afternoon the Bronx Zoo in New York City announced it was closing its World of Reptiles exhibit because a poisonous Egyptian cobra had escaped.

New York seems more amused than terrified, and the snake's Twitter account, @BronxZoosCobra, which appeared yesterday, already has more than 60,000 followers. Among its fans are the City's Press Secretary, Stu Loeser, and actor Steve Martin, who joined the fun with this tweet:

Phone rings. Caller ID: Bronx Zoo. I put on King Tut hat, ready for action. It’s the snake. Hard to hear. Lots of hissing on line.

The Cobra amassed a following so quickly by reaching out to media and celebrities personally:

Dear @, know what's better than tiger's blood? Cobra venom. Also I'm 20 inches long. Just sayin'.

This twitter explosion is the latest in a series of bizarre details surrounding the young snake's escape. The Bronx Zoo issued an official press release saying it was a "snake's game" that could take days or even weeks.

We understand the interest in this story and that everyone wants us to find the missing snake. Right now, it’s the snake’s game. At this point, it’s just like fishing; you put the hook in the water and wait...

The difficulty is that the 20-inch, pencil-thin snake, which is months old and weighs less than 3 ounces, has sought out a secure hiding spot within the Reptile House... As her comfort level rises, she will begin to move around the building to seek food and water.

The New York Times has already published an interview with the tweeting cobra. "I just want Justin Bieber to follow me," the Cobra told The Times, explaining his motivation for tweeting.

Here are some choice snake tweets.

Just FYI, I've had it with Samuel L. Jackson too.
