Despite a series of laws banning the practice, slavery is often justified through enduring religious beliefs brought to this land by conquering Arab-Berbers in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Denied even basic education, most slaves are unaware of their rights and how to seek justice, thus perpetuating their bondage.
