Gates and the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Pledge $100 Million for Vaccine Initiative

The money will go to stopping polio once and for all in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Bill Gates is meeting today with His Highness Shiekh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of United Arab Emirates to announce a joint donation.

On The Foundation blog today, Bill Gates reports that the pledge will focus on children in Pakistan and Afghanistan:

We both realize the incredible impact that cost-effective solutions like childhood vaccines can make; the importance of focusing efforts on the most vulnerable children in conflict regions; and the potential to help a generation of children, their families and communities build a more stable future.

That’s why HH Sheikh Mohammed and the foundation, together, are committing a total of $100 million to global health partners – the GAVI Alliance, the World Health Organization and UNICEF – to purchase life-saving pentavalent and pneumococcal vaccines and the oral polio vaccine.

Gates is in Dubai for the 36th Arab Health Exhibition today—the world's second largest gathering of medical and health-care professionals. The expo has 2,800 exhibitors from 60 countries including pavilions from Germany, France, and Japan showcasing the latest medical equipment and technology.

Full disclosure: The Gates Foundation is the sponsor of GOOD's health coverage.
