I started a kindness-encouraging movement (http://500kindnesses.com/contact-me/) and I have to say, what I loved about it was something completely unexpected:

Over the course of the project, I'd get email notifications of people's "pledging" an act of kindness to the project. After 2 years it amounted to about 1,800 acts of kindness. At the same time, among my friends I became the guy to whom everyone sent great news stories about acts of kindness - and there are a TON of those. On the ride itself we stayed with ten different families whom we had never met before and were offered help and other places to stay along the way (that we didn't take). There are some incredible people.

Being notified of regular people's doing wonderful things pretty much every day for two years really began to change my outlook on humanity in general. I had a bit of a cynical outlook at times, but this project changed so much about how I look at things. I'm no Pollyanna - there's definitely a lot of bad happening, but having it balanced out by hearing about so much good has been wonderful.
