GOOD 100: Meet Marcin Jakubowski, Making Machines Work Smarter

Marcin Jakubowski is the founder of Open Source Ecology, a network of engineers, farmers, and tinkerers hard at work developing a Global Village Construction Set, an open source platform for producing 50 individual machines that form the basis of modern society’s agricultural, industrial, and manufacturing needs.

The GVCS machines together form a loop, from which new assets are produced, and in turn, maintenance and the production of new machines and capabilities are supported. Even with the most basic of resources, communities will theoretically be able to enter new industries and sustain themselves autonomously using these technologies.

Jakubowski’s biggest project is recruiting an executive team of four individuals to stabilize Open Source Ecology as an organization, he says. This is the first necessary step in delivering on the company’s goal for 2013: continuing development of open source documentation and development standards.

“On the technical front, we need to find university professors and staff to run student projects to develop and build machines,” Jakubowski says.

Earlier this year, Jakubowski visited Haiti to explore an opportunity in developing pilot projects for the deployment of the machines. This year, he hopes to find other communities that can benefit from the work of Open Source Ecology and integrate the GVCS into their everyday lives.
