Last month, GOOD and Purina announced the Shine a Light on a Shelter Challenge, an open call for individuals to nominate a shelter that goes above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of animals. We are happy to announce the winner as voted by the GOOD community: Dogs for the Deaf from Oregon.

The shelter works to pair dogs with people who are hearing impaired, as well as those with other disabilities and challenges. All of their dogs are rescued and then put through a training program before being placed with a client.

Dogs for the Deaf will receive a $10,000 grant, and they are already making big plans for it. “The funds will be used to rescue three dogs from a high kill shelter," says Vaughn Maurice, general manager at Dogs for the Deaf. "They will enter our training program, which typically takes four to six months. Dogs that don’t make it through training will go into our regular adoption program."

Thanks to everyone who voted and congratulations to Dogs for the Deaf!
