Expectant women in the United States face a hurdle that most pregnant women don't have to consider: a sky-high medical bill.

"In most other developed countries, comprehensive maternity care is free or cheap for all, considered vital to ensuring the health of future generations," Elisabeth Rosenthal writes in the New York Times.

That doesn't translate into better care, she writes. The average cost of a natural birth in 2012 was nearly $10,000 and $15,000 for a C-section, plus additional fees.
