Helping Afghan Girls Get an Education

In 2008, Afghan native Shabana Basik-Rasikh and American Ted Achilles founded the School of Leadership Afghanistan (SOLA), a program to help Afghan girls get an education. “Afghanistan needs leaders, particularly women who can be role models in Afghan society,” says Basik-Rasikh. SOLA is quietly schooling and giving scholarships to these girls to study abroad. This fall, 40 SOLA girls in Kabul will learn subjects such as English and engage in extracurricular activities like sports and arts.
