Something that I was not really aware of until this happened to an acquaintance of mine, is people who are thinking about suicide sometimes spend months planning it, and they signal loved ones, by telling them they're considering it. Those signals have to be taken seriously. If it's too late, those people that were notified sometimes feel guilt- as if they were the ones that caused the suicide. It's important for them to realize it's not their fault. The mind is really powerful and the way to prevent suicide is to offer more support from professionals. The Trevor Project does a great job of creating a network for those in the LGBT community, but aside from these telephone networks, and psychological help, I'm not sure what else can be done other than raising awareness and reducing the stigma surrounding mental illness.
