How One Dad is Making America's Playgrounds Epic Again

Idealist

Billy Jensen is tired of the boring plastic play structures plaguing US towns, so he's taking matters into his own hands. His nonprofit Epic Playgrounds seeks to return to the heyday of adventure playgrounds—when rockets, carnival wagons, and spaceships abounded.

The ambitious project has a big goal: to create the coolest playgrounds you've ever seen, all across America. If you’re an artist, builder, community developer, or philanthropist and want to get involved, email bill@billyjensen.com.

Alessandra - the more people know about Billy's project, the better. Please pass the word to designer friends!

Rodrigo - that project is awesome on so many levels; thanks for sharing! I especially love this:
"One of the things we've learned through our work is that we need to make design visible. Move your design studio, or your classroom, or your city hall meeting, to the sidewalk. When you're designing and building incredible things in public that no one thinks are possible—not just doing an art project or a mosaic, but actually solving a problem—people are inspired to come up to you and ask questions, and share advice or offer resources. this is so sweet. Has there been any contact between Billy and Darrell Hammond over at Kaboom? Darrell's a GOOD member and it seems the awesomeness of these two efforts might find collaboration valuable.

Good idea, Ben! Billy knows of Kaboom, and Darrell knows of the project. But as far as the two of them linking up, I'm not sure. I'll check in with Billy.

Really cool. Thanks for sharing. This is a great example of how people can collaborate on an awesome project. I want to get involved- but I'm no designer. Maybe I can help build one!
