An architect planning a new apartment building in the U.S. has to include whatever parking spaces are required by local laws. In this infographic, architect Seth Goodman takes a look at the requirements in the Pacific Northwest, where mandatory parking's often over half the size of an apartment, and bigger than the average bedroom. As he points out, all that parking makes for more sprawl, less housing, uglier buildings, and more pollution. Luckily the rules are starting to change in some places.
