Kenyan Girls Use 'Talking Box' to Express Difficult Issues

The Talking Box is a program started Ploycomdev, a local community-based organization in Kibera, Kenya, that allows schoolgirls to write messages about their concerns –– from family financial issues to abuse –– that they are uncomfortable speaking aloud. As a result of the program, educators say there has been a reduced dropout rate and improved academic performance for girls. In addition, schools have been able to report molestation cases to the authorities.
