NASA Is Starting its Own Vegetable Garden—in Space

In the future, lettuce will be grown in space, thanks to new developments by NASA that will allow farming while in orbit. Beginning in December, the Vegetable Production System (Veggie for short) will launch, producing salad-type crops. If all goes well, this could mean astronauts will one day be self-sufficient. The program aims to provide a safe source of fresh food to crews and support relaxation and recreation. It will also cut down the $10K/pound NASA now spends on shuttle food.
