"They get up every morning, and they deal with the obstacle that's in the way."

In 1999, three families and 50 friends got together to open a grocery store in Portland, Oregon, to support local sustainable agriculture. One of the leaders of the effort was Eileen Brady, and the store became New Seasons Market, a grocery company that now has 11 locations in Portland and the surrounding area, and a 12th opening soon. In addition to her work at New Seasons and as operations director at a tech firm, Brady has worked on issues like sustainable agriculture at the Portland non-profit Ecotrust and health care reform as a member of the Oregon Health Policy board. To round all that out, she's now running for mayor of Portland in an election that will take place in May.

Asked her advice to new social entrepreneurs, she talked about the kind of attitude that brings success at any start-up: A relentless ability to identify the challenge of the day and surmount it.
