Recognize a Teacher Who Taught You to Stand Up for What's Right

How do schools create a learning environment that is supportive and safe for all students? It starts with teachers, administrators, coaches, and mentors who stand up against injustice, prejudice, and bullying on campus. According to Facing History and Ourselves, a nonprofit that "combats racism, antisemitism, and prejudice, and nurtures democracy through education programs worldwide," those educators who help us take a stand need to be honored for the difference they make.

To that end, the organization's looking for "Upstanders", middle or high school educators who've "inspired you to speak or act against bigotry and stand against injustice." Think of the teacher who most pushed you to "examine your own mind and heart," and become someone who stands up for what's right. Nominate that person by Monday, October 22 by sharing what you remember most about them, how they taught you to see the world differently, and how something that person taught you continues to have an effect on your today.

Facing History and Ourselves will choose 20 semifinalists and then let the public vote on the educator who inspires you the most. The recipient of the most votes will receive a $5,000 grant to help them continue their work as an Upstander. Nominate the teacher who taught you to stand up for what's right.
