Recycling, the Sortify Way: Swedish Bins Encourage Smart Trash Disposal

Back in October, we singled out the BigBelly Solar Compactor, an alternative to traditional trash cans that uses solar power to compact trash as it is tossed away, as an indicator of the need for smarter trash cans. Today Treehugger highlights a new Swedish effort to simplify and improve trash disposal. Meet the Sortify, a four-chambered trash bin with separations for paper, plastic, glass, or other garbage. Just one year after the plans were drawn by Victoria Soudavnaya and Stefan Strömbäck, the Sortify is a hit:
The idea, according to Miljöaktuellt, is that Sortify can simply and easily replace city trash bins and make recycle sorting a breeze. Soudavnaya says the demand for trash sorting is only going to increase (Oh we hope that's true!) and five cities in Northern Sweden have gone ahead and bought in to buying Sortify cans.
Considering how mindless some people are when it comes to getting rid of trash, would the Sortify serve its purpose in the States? If given the option, do you think people would take an extra half second to separate their glass garbage from paper waste when walking down a busy street?Photo via Sortify and F. Slivka Lederer.
