    At DoSomething.org if you work there for 2 years you get 1 month paid sabbatical to volunteer. I think it helps with retention, especially for an org that employs a lot of young professionals.

    re: selection-- I'm not sure how SAP does it, but when I was in consulting, we'd let folks go on sabbaticals if (1) they were high performers, (2) they've worked at the company for a certain period of time already, and (3) (if I'm remembering correctly) they agree to come back for a minimum amount of time post-sabbatical

    This is such a great idea--good for the employee, good for the employer, and good for the NGOs.

    This reminds me of how Google and other companies encourage their employees to take breaks from their daily grind to work on fun short-term projects.
