Solar-Powered Sterilizer May Curb Bacterial Infections in Off-Grid Regions

A prototype for a solar-powered autoclave—a steam-generating device used to sterilize medical equipment (think an oven or pressure cooker)—has been developed by a team of engineers led by Oara Neumann and Naomi Halas of Rice University. Called the "solarclave," their invention could provide a non-grid solution to regions of the world where electricity fails to reach. Globally, hundreds of millions suffer from healthcare-associated infections brought on by improperly sterilized equipment.
