    Hey Andrew- do you have a how-to for teachers about getting away from the textbook?

      Um... I haven't anything prepared. I've given some advice and received a lot of advice, but I've never created a resource for others to use.

      I'm sure out in the blogworld there is some stuff that could be collected together to create such a resource, (Shawn Cornally for example has some great standards-based grading stuff that could help) but I've never taken the time to do such a thing.

    This does seem like it is significantly more work, but hopefully that would be offset by being a less rote, more rewarding experience for the teacher.

    It also seems that this is likely the results would be a lot more variable depending on the skills of the teacher. Responding to students creative approaches seems like it requires a different skill set than just accurately following lesson plans.

      Also,the administrators need to be willing to allow developing teachers take risks in the classroom. If they never try open lesson planning, they'll never grow past the novice stage.

      I would agree wth you and a skill set like ythr takes time and practice to develop. This is why collaborative staffs and departments are sch a wonderful model. They allow for the reflection and observation it takes to develop that skill set over time.

        Definitely. I had a great experience as an aid at a research school for children with behavioral problems that was on the UCLA campus. It was a highly collaborative environment and I think that really came through to the students.
