Great little nugget from the folks at Pacific Standard looking at the rise of the refrigerator during the Great Depression, the reasons why so many Los Angeles apartments are rented without this appliance, and what that big white box has done to our food system.

A good friend of mine who lives in Santiago, Chile hasn't had a fridge for years. "Why should I?" he told me. "There's dozens and dozens within a few block radius. I just eat fresh food."
