Thought Provoking: Mother Jones' Timeline Of Mental Health Issues In The U.S.

Mother Jones has compiled a brief history of mental health (mis)treatment in the United States, from the first patient admitted to the first asylum in 1773 to the $4.35 billion cuts made in state mental-health spending after to the 2008 recession. It's a history of a society that lobotomized the ill in the 1950s, denied federal funds in the decades since and currently houses more mentally ill people in prisons rather than hospitals. A damning perspective, to say the least—and a reminder that we need health care reform and take better care of the mentally ill.
