Toy Hacking: Training Kids to be Makers

What better way to get more kids making and designing than to encourage them to tear up and rebuild toys? A first glance around the tables at a U.K.-based CommuniToy workshop might seem slightly creepy, with chopped-up dolls and stuffed animals lying in pieces. But the students are thrilled to be there for DIY toy-making.

Each workshop starts with a pile of old toys that were headed for the landfill; the organization that sponsors the classes, Exploring Senses, says that every year in the U.K., 40 million toys are thrown out. By helping students take the toys apart and make creative new hybrid versions, the organization hopes to build a stronger culture of reuse, sharing, and making in the next generation. Classes involve reconstructing toys, as well as basic robotics to make them interactive.

The organization has a new crowdfunding campaign up to help bring the workshops to more communities and schools. Check it out here.

This project is part of GOOD's Saturday series Push for Good—our guide to crowdfunding creative progress.
